The Equality and Human Rights Commission seeks views on how the human rights of older people are respected in home care.

by d.regan 16. November 2010 06:00

The Equality and Human Rights Commission is carrying out a formal inquiry looking at how the human rights of people over 65 are respected in home care. They are seeking the views of older people, their family and their friends about their experience of home care services. They also want the views of current and past home carers / personal assistants, and the views of people and organisations that have knowledge and expertise in this area. Further information is available on their website.

Whilst I am assured that the EAC has the welfare of all of the elderly at heart, here at the Sheltered Housing UK Association we are confused at how the Government and its sub strata i.e. Those said to be resident orientated charities, which in fact rely financially, largely upon selling services to the Government and Housing Providers.

In truth, we feel, asking the end user can directly throw up some pretty nasty objections to the policy for which it is intended that a survey will confirm  support. For example: 97 percent of Residents in rented Sheltered Housing state they only moved into that type of accommodation 'because it had a Warden',
91% said 'They would never have moved in, if they had known that they would take the Warden away'. 99% gave up, or sold up a family sized home in order to move in Sheltered Housing. There are 150 Court cases, representing thousands of residents,  waiting in the wings being brought by dissatisfied residents who have had their Warden service changed. Yet, we read in official documents how residents have embraced the new service which has been foisted upon them.

So will the the EHRC survey of human rights in Care Homes be any different ?

Sincerely
